Spring Pond Startup

Once the temperature begins to consistently be above around 40 degrees Fahrenheit, it is time to open up your pond for the season. Opening it prematurely can be detrimental to your fish health and pond ecosystem, so make sure the warm weather has arrived prior to starting up your pond. To start, you will need to uncover and/or remove your deicer. Hopefully, you installed a pond netting for debris to make your Spring cleanout easier. Use a skimmer net, a long-handled brush, or pond vacuum to remove the pool debris prior to your plant maintenance. Add fertilizer to your aquatic plants and cut back any overgrowth there may be.

Following the deicer, net, and debris removal, and plant maintenance – it is time to change the water. If the sludge was minimal, it is okay to do a 25% clean water change but if there is sludge buildup, it is best to do a complete water change. The next step is connecting your pump and filter back up and testing the water quality. The water quality varies depending on the fish and plants in your pond. Ask one of our knowledgeable staff on what bacteria formulas will work the best for your backyard pond requirements.

Spring Pond Maintenance

After the startup of your pond for the year, it is important to properly maintain your pond throughout the season. If you have fish, you will start off feeding them minimally to moderately and increase their feeding as the weather gets warm. Typically, 60 degrees Fahrenheit is when you will be feeding your fish the regular feedings again. Additional maintenance is regularly removing debris and buildup from the pond bottom, as well as sweeping the surface of the pond for debris. It is also vital that you continually care for and moderate your pond’s bacteria levels to ensure a healthy ecosystem.
