In today’s post, we will discuss the steps you need to take to ensure that your backyard pond is ready to go once winter is over.

Prepare for Spring Pond Startup

It’s important to wait until the outdoor temperature is consistently above 40 degrees Fahrenheit before opening your pond for the spring and summer. If you open the pond when the temps still regularly dip into the 30s, this can adversely affect the health of your fish and the pond ecosystem as a whole. Once the weather is cooperative, you can start the Spring Pond Startup process by uncovering and or removing your deicer. Once this is done, you need to use a skimmer net, long-handled brush, or pond vacuum to any debris from the pool (note: this process goes much more smoothly if you install pond netting when you shut down your pond for the season). Once the pool debris is cleared, you can fertilize your plants, cut back overgrowth, and perform any other necessary plant maintenance.

Once all of these tasks are completed, it’s time to take care of the water, starting by changing it out. If you notice a minimal amount of sludge, then it’s okay to do a 25% clean water change. However, if you notice significant sludge, it’s probably best for the health of the fish and the overall ecosystem to do a full water change. Once this is complete, you need to reconnect your pump and filter before testing the quality of the water in your pond. The quality of the water may vary depending on the fish and plants you have in your pond, so be sure to check with our helpful staff members if you are uncertain about which bacteria formula is appropriate for your backyard pond.

Perform Spring Pond Maintenance

The work doesn’t stop once the pond has been started. You need to perform regular maintenance on your pond throughout the spring and summer to ensure your ecosystem is healthy. If you have fish in your pond, feed them minimally to start, with gradual increases in feeding until the temperature is consistently at 60 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, when you can begin regular feedings. You should also remove buildup from the bottom of the pond, as well as sweeping the surface of the water to remove debris that can clog your filters and hurt the flow of water. You need to be mindful of the bacteria levels in your pond to keep the ecosystem healthy.
